2003 CmPS Team Winners

Intermediate Division First Place

Peasley Middle School: The Green Group

Compost material is taking up an enormous amount of space in local landfills. Why not start compost bins? The Green Group's goal was to have their school cafeteria start a compost bin to compost food waste. The team didn't give up when they were notified that the school would not allow a compost bin to be used. Instead of packing their bags and giving up, the team decided to reach out to the community. They encouraged people in their community to start compost bins at their homes.

Junior Division First Place

Cople Elementary School: The Mollusk Mentors

With the depleting natural filter population (mollusk, aquatic grasses, and wetlands) tidal water isn't filtered as often, thus making it more polluted. The Mollusk Mentors decided to educate the public about what natural filters are, and the role they play in improving water quality. Along with educating the community they decided to lead by example. They are growing 4000 oysters in floating oyster gardens, which will be placed on newly constructed oyster reefs, and they are growing six tanks of aquatic grasses to be transplanted into a local river to help replenish underwater grass beds.

Junior Division Second Place

Washington District Elementary School: Westmoreland Press

Westmoreland County has a rich history and many citizens aren't aware of it. The Westmoreland Press focused their work on creating an awareness of the history of Westmoreland County in order to better educate citizens about historical people and events that took place in their "own backyards." These efforts will lead up to the 350th anniversary of Westmoreland County.

Junior Division Third Place

Haycock Elementary School: R.E.A.C.T

Normally active and energetic students spend 4 to 5 hours playing video games, usually ones that were violent in theme. This was not good. According to REACT, research showed that playing violent video games can increase a person's aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. REACT decided to focus their efforts on educating the public about the negative side effects of violent games.
