George Wythe Medallion

Much that is admirable about outstanding FPSers is immediately apparent: quick, clever, creative, knowledgeable, diligent, and hardworking. But other important qualities might not be so obvious.

Do you work with a teammate who puts in the time and effort required to select just the right word for the key verb phrase? What about team spirit? Some team members inspire by setting an example of generosity and open-mindedness while considering the feelings and contributions of each individual on the team. Finally, how about that member who serves as the conscience of group, intervening at important moments to keep everyone honest or saving another team member from feeling defeated.

To honor these qualities, Future Problem Solving of Virginia created the George Wythe Medallion. It is different from other awards bestowed on Future Problem Solvers in one very significant way: nominees can only be put forward by a fellow team member. Named for an intelligent, courageous, ethical, but scarcely known Virginian, George Wythe, students will have an opportunity to honor one of their own.

Future Problem Solving will soon send an official nominating form to all registered coaches. The form is short and simple. When it arrives, FPSer may fill out the form, explaining his or her reasons for nominating the teammate. The prompt is "In 100 words or less, explain why the student you are nominating exemplifies the qualities of integrity, intelligence, and inspiration in problem solving situations. Continue on the back of this form or submit a separate sheet." Both the student and his or her coach must sign the form.
