Carolyn Stamm named 2000 Mover and Shaker Citing her long and significant support of Future Problem Solving in Virginia, the executive board of the state program awarded the annual Mover and Shaker Award to Carolyn Stamm of Virginia Beach. Carolyn Stamm has served as coach, evaluator, board member, and coordinator of Community Problem Solving and several state bowls. Her teams and individuals have represented Virginia at every international conference since the first state bowl and teams have won international titles in both the regular program and community problem solving. The Mover and Shaker Award is Future Problem Solving of Virginia's highest noncompetitive honor. ______________ 400 future problem-solvers compete for state honors (Reprinted by permission of the Virginian-Pilot) BY VANDANA SINHA, STAFF WRITER VIRGINIA BEACH - Doors slammed shut along the hallways. A voice announced over the loudspeaker at exactly 5 p.m. that the test had begun. For two hours Friday, students from across the state were left to compete in an academic tournament that reached into the problem-solving corners of their minds. For two hours, their coaches were left outside the doors, mulling in groups and sitting alone, wondering what was running through those young minds. So began the Ninth Annual Future Problem Solving of Virginia State Bowl at Larkspur Middle School, a tournament of intellects thats sometimes equally grueling for the students who take the test and for the coaches who must sit outside and wait it out. This year, 400 students from 41 Virginia schools - including 72 students from Norfolk, Suffolk and Virginia Beach schools - wrestled with how to further modernize a hypothetical Internet-based personal communicator system that will exist in the year 2040. Eighty groups of four students were assigned to brainstorm 20 possible challenges, and then 20 possible solutions to their underlying problem. They ended up with written reports, which were judged practically overnight. Awards and placements will be given today at Larkspur. The top four teams - one each from grade levels 4-6 and 7-9 and two from grade levels 10-12 - will go on to the international tournament June 8-11 at the University of Georgia in Athens. They will compete in much the same format against teams from Canada, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. During the test, the students were sequestered in different classrooms, where little more than a dictionary, a thesaurus, blank paper and pencils were allowed. Coaches couldn't even stroll near the hallways, which were closely guarded by monitors. Unlike practices, the coaches couldn't guide their students toward different ideas. They couldn't point out important twists in the question to keep in mind. They couldn't talk them through possible solutions. "I'm just so nervous," said Ann H. Colorado, an Old Donation Center gifted teacher who coached two fifth-grade teams to the state bowl. "They're like my little babies." Most of the coaches whiled away the time by comparing their own answers to the test questions, hoping their students picked up the nuances or remembered their research from practices. "You think about, 'Did I miss anything in practice?'" said Chris Fischer, a fourth- and fifth-grade gifted teacher at Norfolk's Stuart Center who coached five teams this year. Two stressful hours later, some coaches had positioned themselves at their given hallways, ready to snap a photo or hug students coming out of the classrooms. Some of them heaved as big a sigh of relief as the students who felt they had done well. Belinda X. Zhao, 14, agreed that as tough as it was for her, it must have been a lot more nerve-racking for her coach, Carolyn Stamm, who also organized the state bowl with her husband, Neil. "She has no idea how we're doing, the Kemps Landing Magnet School eighth-grader said, describing the test as one of the most exhausting she has taken. It must be hard. Next The top four teams will go on to the international tournament June 8-11 at the University of Georgia, where they will compete against teams from around the world.
