State Bowl X

Staunton hosts tenth anniversary bowl

Staunton, one of the most historic and picturesque cities in the Shenandoah Valley, will long be remembered as host of the 2001 State Bowl. Future Problem Solving of Virginia is indebted to the administration of Staunton Public School and to the staff of Shelburne Middle School for their efforts in making State Bowl X such a success.

George Wythe Medallion

This year, Future Problem Solving of Virginia introduced a new award. It is different from our other competitions because, in order to participate, a candidate must be nominated by a fellow teammate and endorsed by his or her coach. The award is named for a highly respected Virginian - George Wythe. Although not as famous as Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, or George Washington, Wythe influenced an entire generation. He encouraged others as a teacher of the law and courageously championed the cause of liberty and justice for all Americans — black and white. It is fitting that we should honor his memory as we honor our own problem solvers who have exemplified Wythe’s qualities of integrity, intelligence, and inspiration. Here are the first recipients of the award, announced at the 2001 State Bowl:

Mover & Shaker

Mover & Shaker

The executive board of Future Problem Solving of Virginia awarded this year's highest non-competitive honor, the Mover And Shaker Award, to Judith Hornbeck.

Citing her consummate professionalism, intelligence, vision, and hard work, the program lauded Mrs. Hornbeck for her key role in founding the organization, and for her efforts in guiding its early development.

The Mover and Shaker Award was created to recognize individuals for making significant and lasting contributions to problem solving education. The 2001 award is especially significant, since it coincides with the organization's tenth anniversary.

Judi Hornbeck's participation in Future Problem Solving began when she coached a middle school team from Northumberland, Virginia that represented the state in the international competition. She went on to serve on the Virginia program's executive board, and coordinated statewide evaluation. Judi now serves as Director of Instruction for Dare County, North Carolina Public Schools.
